The salt industry in Mtwara Region is experiencing remarkable growth following improved investment conditions, enhanced production technologies and continued Government support aimed at strengthening the sector.
Speaking on the progress of the industry, Winnifrida Mrema said the Government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for salt producers has significantly boosted production and attracted more investors to the region.
She explained that the reduction of licence fees together with increased support to small scale producers has opened new opportunities for local entrepreneurs and expanded employment within the industry.
According to Mrema, the growing investor confidence in the sector is expected to position Mtwara among Tanzania’s leading centres for quality salt production serving domestic, agricultural and industrial markets.
She noted that the improvements in production technologies have also helped producers increase efficiency and improve the quality of salt supplied to different sectors of the economy.
Mrema further emphasized that the Government will continue working closely with stakeholders to ensure sustainable growth of the industry while creating more economic opportunities for residents in the region.
The expansion of the salt sector is expected to contribute significantly to economic development in southern Tanzania through increased revenues, job creation and industrial growth.
